Retro Mini Metro City

Little shops, big imaginations! Celebrating Metrocentre’s 40th birthday in style.

The Brief

2026 marked 40 years of Metrocentre, and a milestone like that called for a big celebration!

To kick things off, Metrocentre wanted to create an all-new Easter experience for younger visitors, inspired by the bold, playful spirit of the stores that featured at the shopping centre in the 80s.

The objectives were clear: increase family footfall, extend dwell time, and drive social engagement across the Easter half-term. From this, Retro Mini Metro was born!

The Magic

Metrocentre stepped back in time with Retro Mini Metro, a fully custom-built experience packed with handcrafted sets, nostalgic props, and 80s-inspired costumes to celebrate 40 magical years of Metrocentre!

Made up of six of Metrocentre’s iconic locations from the 1980’s: the Clockworks Food Court, Georgie Jeans, Metro Movies, Metroland, MC Beauty Salon and Metro Toys, the space delivered a vibrant, nostalgia-filled experience for visitors this Easter.

Designed to bring generations together, the experience encouraged children to explore real-life scenarios, build confidence, and connect with others, all whilst having fun! At the same time, parents were invited to revisit the Metrocentre they remembered growing up with.

The Wins

Retro Mini Metro was a huge success, with a footfall of 2,500 children and an average dwell time of 30 minutes, totalling a whopping 61,500 minutes of extra time spent in-centre over the two-week activation!

Alongside delivering on its core objectives, the event also raised over £500 for the charity partner, Daisy Chain, in support of autistic and neurodivergent individuals, making it an all-round success.
